Today, I abandoned my chores, have stayed in pajamas all day, read books, and lounged about without agenda. As I think back on yesterday, I realize that the times when I have no expectations often turn out to be the most surprising and delightful. We accepted an invitation to dine with family friends in Los Angeles and take a break from our usual tradition of dinner at our house. My husband Woody was thrilled not to have to cook a turkey on the Weber barbecue this year. My son John voiced a desire to remain in the comforts of home, and I felt a sense of loss with this the first holiday that my son and his family would not be present to celebrate with us. The day unfolded with mix of multi generational people with different lifestyles, experiences, and world views. We met relatives from England, Washington DC, and my favorite was Eleanor was a charmingly bright young woman of 19 (my son’s age) from Australia. We all engaged in lively conversation as lyrical accented voices filled the room with laughter and warmth. Today, the day after Thanksgiving, I give thanks for the gift of this enchanting evening and special memories that linger with me.
