Journal of Sacred Work

Caregivers have superpowers! Radical Loving Care illuminates the divine truth that caregiving is not just a job. It is Sacred Work.

About

Today's meditation was written by Cathy Self, Senior Vice-President for the Baptist Healing Trust.

"We turn not older with years, but newer every day" – Emily Dickinson.

Some astrophysicists have devoted their work to the proposition that life exists in many other places and dimensions of time. Other theorists and scientists have suggested life, as we know it and understand it, is far more rare. Author John Izzo notes that the only thing we know for certain is that life surrounds us here and now. He defines a miracle as "an extraordinary event that we cannot explain" and offers the idea that we are surrounded by miracles and are, indeed, living a miracle.

"This fact that I am writing this and you are pondering where you stand on the matter is a miracle," writes Izzo. We celebrate the miracle of new life created between a man and a woman, the miracle of a sunset, the wonder and miracle that this planet revolves at all around a massive sun. And there are the everyday miracles of friendship, hot soup, and a place to safely rest at night. But maybe, "maybe we are so surrounded by miracles that we start to miss them, to take them for granted. And maybe, just maybe, life would be very different, and more profoundly good, if we thought about it more often and remembered how miraculous it all is. Perhaps then we would start treating it all with just a little more respect, a little more care, a shade more awe, and maybe the miracles will keep happening (John Izzo)."

My colleague Jennifer Oldham has noted we seem to pay attention to what is miraculous only in its absence. The miracle of friendship is too often recognized only when it is betrayed, the miracle of acceptance longed for in the face of rejection. Perhaps it is a good thing to ponder, to recognize in this moment the miracles that surround us, and most of all the miracle of ourselves. Perhaps today we may ponder the miracle of healing we hold in our hands and hearts, the potential that rests in each and every day and in each and every encounter. I have seen in your words and lives the miracle of Love. Where have you seen a miracle today?

I welcome this opportunity to share a few of the teachings and from a Course in Miracles because they resonate with me as spiritual truth. The following are just a few of the principles on the meaning of miracles.
“Miracles occur as natural expressions of Love. The real miracle is the love that inspires them. In this sense, everything that comes from love is a miracle.
There is no order of difficulty in miracles. One is not “harder” or “bigger” than another. They are all the same. All expressions of Love all maximal.
Miracles are a kind of exchange. Like all expressions of love, which are always miraculous in the true sense, the exchange reverses the physical laws. They bring more love to both the giver and receiver.
Each day should be devoted to miracles. The purpose of time is a learning device and should be used constructively.
A miracle is never lost. It may touch many people you have not even met, and produce undreamed of changes in situations of which you may not even be aware.
Yesterday I revealed a painful secret in that I’ve experienced a sense of unworthiness most of my life. This feeling has been at a cellular level, from subconscious messages I received, perceived, and interpreted in my mind. The Course teaches that although our perceptions may seem very real to us, they are often misperceptions. Thoughts of lack and scarcity generate fear. As we learn to recognize our mistaken perceptions, “we can learn to look past them and forgive them.” “Sin is a lack of Love. Since love is all there is, sin in the sight of the Holy Spirit is a mistake to be corrected, rather than an evil to be punished.” Often we allow into our awareness only what conforms to our perceived notions. Miracles can awaken us to what is real; “help us remove the blocks to Love’s presence which is our natural inheritance.” I know this to be true and I can no longer say that I am not worthy of Love. I know in my core that “as God’s creation, I am, and we are wholly loveable and wholly loving.” This in itself is a great gift and a miracle.
I receive your meditation with gratitude and Love.
    Thank you!

My miracle today was the gift of patience. I left yesterday, because of distractions and emergencies not related to me that I was drawn into, I left flustered and second guessing much of my day’s work.
Today was different in that I brought the gift of patience with me. The weight of yesterday melted as I moved forward at work. And my next miracle was that I wasn’t solicited for extra support (smile).
In closing, I speak of miracles in the term of gifts. This helps me to see them and to appreciate them all the more.
