Journal of Sacred Work

Caregivers have superpowers! Radical Loving Care illuminates the divine truth that caregiving is not just a job. It is Sacred Work.

About

Chip - baseball   From the time we are younger than I was in the photo at left, life sends us a barrage of mixed messages.

We are to obey the rules, and yet the greatest among us always break them. We are to perform with perfection, but, when we do, we draw a crowd of those jealous of our success. Try to eat healthy and friends will constantly urge you to take an extra dessert.

Peer pressure to "fit in" exerts enormous power. It's no wonder that our natural creativity wanes early. By age three our wildest creative ideas are generally tamped down by parents who want what? – for their children to fit in!

In spite of wide-ranging success across my life, I've never felt I fitted in. In school, I was often punished for breaking rules. In work settings as a lawyer, judge, hospital CEO, television producer, minister and artist, I have always been viewed as a renegade.

Where do "renegade" caregivers, ones who insist on living Love  while caught in a maelstrom of rules, turn for advice and comfort?

June 7 marks the fifth anniversary of the Journal as a "place of sharing for loving caregivers." Part of our goal has been to help you find balance amid the cross currents of your life.

Your more radical efforts at loving care will often find resistance. Your patient's hope you you won't give up. We are here to support you.

Over one thousand essays have been posted here over the past five years. I used to write them every day. Finally, I cut down to two a week and tried to focus more on the quality of each piece.

Then, Liz Wessel joined the Journal as weekend writer. Her contributions are consistently fabulous. She brings us not only her prose but the poetry of her paintings and mandalas – great gifts of peace and Love.

Substantially more than five thousand comments have been posted on the Journal by those who seek to share caring words with others. Your contributions are deeply appreciated.

We are approaching nearly two hundred thousand visits to the Journal. Lovely as that is, more people visit the sites of stars like Justin Bieber in five minutes than have visited us in five years.

A journal about loving care has no chance of competing with sites like these. Yet, we remain grateful for those who choose to visit the Journal and who pass along the work we offer.

The teachings of God's Love are always more popular than the practice. "Love your enemies?" People who try to do that are often viewed as fools – as people who don't "fit in."

Love, if it has a reward on earth, must always provide its own gift. Each day, we have the chance to decide whether we will choose to live Radical Loving Care against pressures to fit in.

Right now, someone nearby needs you. God's gift is that whatever choice you make, you are loved.

-Reverend Erie Chapman

I am so grateful for this journal! To be a loving caregiver in the current constantly changing health care world is to be a spiritual warrior in full battle. We need sustenance to stay vital and able to “be the change you want to see in the world.” (Gandhi). This journal is that sustenance. It is the place I can come to and know that I am seen and not alone on my path. Often we are asked by the bureaucracy to achieve contradictions…almost to be in two places at once…to give care without giving care…meet the ever growing monstrous changes of medicare regulations while trying to do what we came there for, which is to care for people in need. It can get pretty ludicrous and has a quality of violence toward the soul that is an ever present danger. So, it is more than helpful to come to this gentle haven for encouragement. It is a life raft. Thank you so much, Erie and Liz for being the port in this storm.

    Dear Erie,
I am so grateful that you made the decision to continue as editor of this Journal upon your retirement. As I reflect back to the Journal’s beginning I feel, it has been a great unfolding of abiding Love and friendship. To read and reflect upon your daily reflections enabled me to keep a Loving Intention at the forefront of each day. For me it evolved into a spiritual practice. I was better able to integrate the daily teaching through posting a thoughtful response.
I am honored to serve with you on this Journal, Erie, (for the past year and a half, now.) It was a big leap of faith on your part to encourage my participation as weekend contributor and I am truly grateful. Perhaps, it has been a leap of faith on my part too because accepting this challenging but rewarding role has been a big stretch. One of the greatest blessings has been our connection, and evolving relationship, with this little community of kindred spirits. The readers’ comments enrich the Journal experience tremendously. I find it takes considerable effort to create a new post each week; one that I embrace. My greatest joy has been discovering the expansive nature of Love. For through expression, whether responding to your beautiful reflections or sending forth one of my own, I literally can feel a physical sensation as my heart expands.
To know we are Loved is a magnificent gift worth sharing. Thank you for sharing your love with all of us and let us continue to share that Love with those we encounter. ♥

Thank you Erie, for the “Renegade” in You. I love the different ones, the ones that don’t fit in, the ones that think “out of the box”, the innovators. You are the right type of renegade. The good Renegades come along when the timing is just right….and there you are!
What? Jealous of Justin Bieber? (do you secretly want to be a rock star?):>–teasing of course…. Don’t trouble yourself with comparisons of movie star sites–they come and go with the latest fashion…..however, sites like the Journal have sustaining purpose of support and sharing as we go about our daily lives…sites like this are not fleeting, but stick with us for a long time, sustaining us as we go.
You and Liz give us advice, comfort, wisdom, poetry, art, music, dance, etc., but you also give us a voice. That voice is the voice of the heart. Keep it flowing from you to us and back again.

Do we really feel the same? Just a few days ago, I was patiently pondering on this feeling of “not fitting in”. As my first daughter expressed these feelings she had in so many times.. Ah.. I did have quiet a number of my own when I was growing up… yes.. the rejection was strong I thought, hummm.. but I am still standing here. Oh well.. it hasn’t gone away… there are still times I do feel different and don’t fit in. I guess the secret formula is to face every situation being content. As I seek contentment in God today, then I will be satisfied in love. Here in Radical loving care, we find balance amid the cross currents of our lives we share… Thank you Rev. Erie for sharing your Journal of Sacred Work! Blessings.

Rev. Erie – Congratulations on the Journal’s 5th Anniversary. Your site is one where I find peace, education and camaraderie from your valuable gifts and Liz’ multi-faceted contributions.
As you approach the 200,000 visitor mark, please know that all those hot “15-minute” celebrities who race for the quickest response/highest number of hits (like empty calories) have a short shelf life.
I look forward to seeing the world through your vision with essays, challenges, stories, photos, music and memories that are more meaningful and longer lasting…

Congratulations and thank you Erie and your team. How wonderful for us to have this opportunity to pause, to remember and to be challenged yet again. Erie your form of ‘renegade’ has given life, hope and love to many, many people. Continually we are challenged to be radical, to be loving and to be caring, thanks to you and your inspiring and wise words. Thank you once again and thanks to Liz who lives what she writes. We rejoice and celebrate.

Now, if the renegade Erie were to get two new piercings and an odd tatoo, this journal might get the same press as Justin Bieber of late… 🙂

The journal continues to be conduit. I believe it is a vessel in which God uses to help sand some rougher edges, smooth some areas that just need a little polish and boldly, yet gently shock and confront me with areas that help me prepare myself for a better level of compassionate, loving care. Thank you Erie. God bless you with health and wellness, joy and continued faith
