The Old Year Runs Away From Me ~by Joyce Rupp

The old year runs away from me.

I hang onto her sleeve

But she shakes me loose.

Where does the old year go

When the new year comes?

She slips away into memories,

Falls into the crevices of wishes

And ought-to-have-dones.

She waits no longer upon promises,

Turns her back on might-have-been.

The elves of the old year step in,

Pack up the struggles, store the joys,

Tuck them away in the bulging box

Spreading out on the psyche’s floor.

It’s up to the new year now.

I bring a lot to her domain:

Expectations, dreams, hopes,

And I place them all before

Her strong, abundant door.

I walk into her untamed territory,

With meek apprehension

And a vast sense of mystery.

Assured by the welcome I receive,

Anxious about what is waiting

Behind the drawn window shade,

Curious about what I will discover

In the hidden folds of her new days.

… as we enter into the new year may we pause and reflect on how precious life is with the awareness that it is always going. The most treasured gift we can give or receive are small gestures of thoughtfulness offered in the spirit of love and friendship.

The gifts of the heart are indeed those long remembered and the ones that we carry within to sustain us in challenging times.

Within these pages we have discovered one another and cultivated a community that nurtures and celebrates our diverse journeys. We have travelled together and in doing so helped each other to stretch and grow.

May the Love that connects us all provide comfort and peace, no matter how near or far our roads may take us.

How true, is it Liz, that ‘the Love that connects us all provides comfort and peace, no matter how near or far our roads may take us’. May Love accompany you into the days, weeks and months of 2015.

“It’s up to the new year now…” Thank you for positioning us as we encompass both old and new, Liz. Thank you also for celebrating the ways in which “we have discovered one another and cultivated a community that nurtures and celebrates our diverse journeys” in the pages of this Journal.
I look forward to being a continuing companion and support to all those who come here for a few minutes during the week and hope this place may continue to be a sanctuary.

“My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road, though I may know nothing about it. Therefore will I trust you always, though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.”
I read this prayer this morning that resonates. Perhaps, you are familiar with it? It was written by Thomas Merton which was posted onBeing.org.
Thank you for your comments, each received as the special gift that you are to me.
