Journal of Sacred Work

Caregivers have superpowers! Radical Loving Care illuminates the divine truth that caregiving is not just a job. It is Sacred Work.

About

Surreal sunset - copyright erie chapman 2017  Caregivers engage countless ways to relate to each other as well as to patients. Words are only one bridge. Symbols speak eloquently depending on how they are offered, shared & interpreted.

This Gulf Coast setting was beautiful before I photographed it. The small tree at the horizon drew me to this point of view – not standing at the beach but back far enough to include more.

The original photograph is not the actual sunset, of course. The camera is a filter that offers a representation of what I saw.

Adding fire, hawk, stained glass & misplaced waves creates a different experience. Every element & the image as a whole has the meaning we choose for it.

Stained glass symbolize sacredness. We can worship here as deeply as in a formal church.

Symbology impacts caregiving. Pictures of loving caregivers lining a hospital's halls support both compassionate cultures & the confidence of patients. A cross, Star of David or the non-denominational symbols of Radical Loving Care reinforce loving missions.

Joseph Campbell defined a symbol as "an energy evoking and directing agent." Hospitals & hospices signal anxiety. The right symbols help Compassion defeat Fear opening the door to healing.

Intriguing piece, especially the photo! “loving caregivers lining a hospital’s halls” holds meaning to me as a symbol of the VA volunteers I served with for five years in the 1970’s in Missouri and New York.
The image is vividly clear: old, very old, and even very young; came to help the old vets and ease their discomforts, through serving coffee, pushing wheelchairs, playing billiards, but most of all: sharing the God-given gift of presence with others, less fortunate than them!

The image inspires me to believe all of the items are naturally occurring in the same setting. Thought provoking.

This morning as I read your reflection and gazed at your marvelous image, I resisted the impulse to add a comment too quickly. Instead, I decided to return again this evening.
I love, love, love the art you created, Erie. The way the sea is peeling back like parchment enabling us to glimpse the scene. The gorgeous robin egg hues of twilight sky, and hawks translucent feathered wings soaring free.
Your added description was helpful because I might have otherwise missed the stain glass and other details until I clicked to enlarge the photo. What a great paring with the reflection offered.
Fear often accompanies suffering “The right symbols help Compassion defeat Fear opening the door to healing.” There is so much fear in the world. May we learn to turn towards suffering with our full presence and transform fear with Love.

Last night I saw an ad for a healthcare company. Very slick, well done. The only way I knew it was a healthcare company was their name at the end. No where in the ad was there a mention of the people who work for them, the people they care for or the interactions to drive a better result of care. It was all about data. Until the end I thought it was going to be a new IBM commercial. If the company tells you that all they care about is 0’s and 1’s and you are a barcode, why be in the business. Care of Health should be the Number One. Data should be the character from a Star Trek show.
Composite is many layers seen together as one, like a marriage. Like a union with God…
