On this day, day 87 of the year 2008, how are you experiencing your journey to live Love? Does Love inform the why of your leadership? Do you believe? Do you “madly love” those you serve? I hope so – the world needs your mad love.

The human heart is both fragile and strong. It is vulnerable to wounds and it is capable of the most important actions any person can take toward another. It requires courage to take these actions, the kind of courage that Love enables.

We cannot change people. But we can, as Gandhi so often said, be the change we want to see in the world. We can make our own contribution to the culture of our team, our workplace, and those we serve. We can be people of Love.

Perhaps we may rise above skin deep decision and recognize that, as Maya Angelou says so eloquently, “Love cost all we are/and will ever be/ but it is only love/which will set us free.”

Reflection can be a powerful opportunity for our hearts to become re-engaged in what we are doing.

Ultimately, visual art, whether as painting, silhouettes, photographs or movies, is about perception. How do we, as caregivers, see each other and our patients? Have we trained our hearts to see the rich layers that exist within each person we encounter? Or do we simply see others as cardboard cutouts?

This is why all caregivers need to stay in touch with art. And it’s why it’s worth taking a glance at a five minute video of a community of actors who decide to challenge the routine of everyday by creating art in an unexpected place.
