The requirement of professional distance for caregivers creates pitfalls. Too much distance seals off humanity. Falling too deeply into patient’s troubles can exhaust caregivers. Most of my fellow former caregivers at Baptist Hospital, Riverside Methodist, and Riverside Toledo found the right balance.
