Shake It Off: A Reflection on Mark 6
Healing, helping, lifting, feeding, restoring wholeness, affirming. Now the master is weary and wants to go home. But home is no refuge. Not a place where it’s okay to be real, to hang loose, nor even to celebrate the victories of days just past.
Home is where everyone got locked into their presumptions of how he used to be. “Isn’t that the carpenter’s boy? Why, I’ve known him since he was just a wee squirt. Now just who does he think he is…?”
And he was not able to do any great deeds of power among them.
Shake off the dust from your sandals and keep walking. That’s what he told his followers about how to handle rejection, failure, ingratitude, and aborted efforts. Shake it off, and keep a-goin’.
He could have sulked, but he didn’t. He could have resented, but that would not accomplish his aim. He could have shot back the same nasty venom that had been launched at him, but he kept in mind his own convictions. And he considered the source: it was their prejudice, not his unfaithfulness. Their limits need not be his limits.
So he shared his vision and power with his followers. Then he sent them out to do the good that he had been attempting. And he went on his merry way, continuing to do his work of goodness with others.
There’s no limit to all the amazing good God can do in the world — if the servants are not choosy about who gets all the credit for it!
So today I shake off the slurs and jabs, the gossip and ingratitude, the misunderstandings and mistakes. I shake that dust from my sandals, share my power and vision, and step joyfully into a new path of light.

Things I have learned from Energy Rounding:
When we round at PMC, it is for the purpose of raising the energy level of the staff in the hospital.
We round to give praise and thanks for the hard work our staff does each and every day.
We make it fun and give special recognition to staff which are identified by the supervisor on duty of each department.
I have learned to round for the purpose of uplifting the staff around me and feed them with my energy.
I have learned that a “Thank You” goes a long way.
I have learned that I can make a big difference in someone’s day with a smile and hello mixed in with some laughter.
I have learned that it takes me 3 hours to round on all departments during a normal work day if I move quickly.
However, the biggest surprise was to learn when I give my energy to all who cross my path on a rounding day my own energy is elevated to heavenly hights and that is worth all the effort I put out, 10 fold.

    Chip,
I stumbled on to your Journal quite by accident several weeks ago and have been logging on a couple of times a week since then. It almost sounds like you went to seminary after your days at Riverside. The Journal has a strong spiritual flavor to it which I truely appreciate. I too continue the sacred work of training and educating chaplains and seminary students through the CPE program where I work. Thanks for the Journal and keep up the great work. With warmest regards,
    Chaplain John Valentino

These last 2 posts are wonderful..such important points to ponder. For those difficult to love are, in fact, the ones who need it most. I believe God considered us capable, that’s why He chose to put them on OUR paths.
    Thanks for the reminder.
