Spread out on grains of sand

in

Northern Kenya

mothers hold children who

will die today of starvation

& there is nothing we can do

about that, we say,

for anyone so far away

except to pray.

Killing bands burst from

jungle hiding places

to machete Muslims/Christians

in

Nigeria

today

& there is nothing we can do,

we say,

for anyone so far away

except to pray.

In the mountains of northern

Pakistan

it’s so cold today that, here in the dawn

of the twenty-first century

children will freeze to death.

& there is nothing we can do,

we say

for anyone so far away

except to pray.

Within our sight

within our touch

souls cry for help right here,

not far away.

Will we do more than pray

What? How much?

& will it be today?

Today I went to visit Betty, dear friend, and nurse who is dying. She has entered that transition phase where she is barely here with us and is no longer responding. Hoping that she might still hear the words of love and affection spoken, the affirmations of a life well lived; still feel the comfort of her hand being caressed and held. Over the last few months, I visited Betty each Sunday to offer communion and share in the fellowship of prayer. One way Betty desired to say her goodbyes, express her love and gratitude to special people in her life, was through letter writing. She allowed me the sacred honor of writing down the words she spoke to compose these letters. I realize that part of life is facing our own mortality. Bearing witness to how Betty has faced her own impending death in a most down to earth, straightforward manner, with honesty, grace, and acceptance, has been a true gift to me.

I feel blessed to be able to reach out to others in my own work. Yes, I think about and pray for those around the world who suffer each day and I mourn the cruelty and hatred in the world. Thank you for encouraging those of us who are caregivers.
