Journal of Sacred Work

Caregivers have superpowers! Radical Loving Care illuminates the divine truth that caregiving is not just a job. It is Sacred Work.

About

So much of us remains hidden. So much of our voice, even when spoken, may never feel heard. To speak and not be heard is a painful life experience. It may cause us, in our fear, to lock away some of our best gifts in the darkest chambers of our hearts.

Quiet_flower_0317_2 I feel a sadness for voices never heard, for gold lost in the shadows beneath the trees, for dear people I know who share just enough of their hearts to reveal that there is so much more living in the still waters of their souls. It brought these words:

Often

.

Often

I wonder about the stream

that flows beneath your voice,

the wordless current

that surges below syllables,

the hidden truth that courses

toward the unknown lake.

Often

I wonder what thoughts dwell

in the endless wells of your eyes.

What echoes sing to each other

in the caves that line the valley

or hide in the shadows away

from the sun-drenched flower?

Often

I imagine entering these waters

of yours, listening to your other

voices, hearing the music of your

secret songs.

This is such a touching meditation. Suddenly, I found myself in tears for all those who never feel heard. And, I suppose, for myself. Caregiver’s work can be so lonely. In the long New England winters (and even in the short summers) as I am walking to my car at the end of a twelve hour shift, I sometimes feel as though my work is never noticed. I comfort myself in the knowing that even if my own voice isn’t heard, I have heard someone else and shown respect for them in their pain. This is what God seeks from me and I am glad to give it.
Thank you for hearing my voice.

This is a very thought-provoking meditation – one of the best I’ve seen yet in this wonderful journal. It certainly speaks to me and I hope to many others. Thank you for the way you are recognizing the hearts of care givers.

I appreciate this effort to recognize the deeper voices hidden within us. Nurses are called upon to do a great deal of task work and to respond to multiple complex needs from patients.
We ask nurses to remember that patients are human and multi-dimensional. We need to remember that nurses, as well, have deep needs that may be lost, along with their deeper voice, in the milieu of patient care.

I am one of those people whose voice is often not heard. Partely because of my being an introvert AND because most people don’t really stop long enough to listen. However I have encountered a few people who have noticed something deep within, behind my eyes, and have taken the time to encourage me to boldness. I will be eternally grateful for them.
