The day flicks sparks of autumn into my eyes. October has a different scent.

The day flicks sparks of autumn into my eyes. October has a different scent.
AutumnsmokehazecropThe other side of spring is things dying so why does October’s breath smell so fresh?
In the hills, the earth puffs the smoke of summer’s remains.
Clouds search the curved horizon for a place to hide.
October wears a different scent. I will be present to her today.
I pull on her sweater, breathe her musk. In the Hospice blocks away, this is the last autumn for the woman in the pink robe who reaches for her jacket, slips it on, shuffles into the courtyard on limbs tired as old oaks. She leans into the sun, breathes the aroma of her last October.
In the hospital across the street, a new person breathes his first breath, inhales his first fall, the first days of his earth journey. His mother smiles out the window. Flicks of autumn spark her eyes. She knows October has a different scent…

Today we will talk of energy – the river of love that flows down the mountains past the shedding  AspensAspens. She invites us to baptize ourselves in her water and to lift diamond droplets to drape the necks of those in need.
Her water is alive with the only energy that can slake our thirst.
She reminds us of the living water.

Today we will talk of intelligence –
the things my hands know,
the genius of your eyes,
the wide brilliance of your arms,
how smart you are to know, in your being,
what my being needs.

Angel_caring Today we will talk of presence –
the way you enter my room,
quiet as an angel, sit near me,
draw away some of my pain,
shift it onto your smooth shoulders,
share with me the communion of suffering.

Tonight, we will talk of light as the sun collapses into the October hills.
October has a different scent. We will breathe her together.

The coming night is our friend. We will welcome her to our circle,
listen as she reads to us October’s story.

At midnight, we will dream our own dreams & each others.
Dream-flying over October, we will land on the shoulder of the woman in the pink robe
& whisper relief. We will alight near the tiny
baby and sing a lullaby.

Autumn_night
We will lie in moonlight by October’s river
as she flows beneath the Aspens.
We will sip her night scent.
We will drink a glass of autumn,
And celebrate Love’s gifts.

October is my favorite month. Not only because of the relief of summer heat, but because some of my favorite people were born in October. My youngest daughters will be 13 tomorrow. Their mischievous eyes sparkled as I asked them to have a fantastic last day of being 12. One of them quickly said that she would do all those fun and immature things you can get away with at 12. They know, without fully understanding, the innocence and beauty of just being and breathing the scent of the moment.

This meditation is so poetic and I love the way it talks about October. Where I live, the leaves have begun to turn and this morning I paid particular attention to what you mentioned. Yes, October does smell different. Thank you for helping me be “present” to it.

This meditation is intended to be more reflective as we move through seasons – the season of our patient’s lives and our own seasons of presence.

    Karen,
I appreciate hearing about the joys in your life, your daughters. This weekend I experienced joy as I held my granddaughter and stroked her sweet little face while she slept in my arms.

I, too, love October. Thank you for this beautiful reflection. My youngest son turned 13 this year. Oh, the wonder of teenagers! So much fun…enjoy!

I receive today’s meditation as a most precious gift. Your loving images stir sparks of autumn in my heart. As I open to the beauty of your words, I let them settle into my being. I look through your window to gaze upon autumn’s beauty and I am drawn outside to breathe in unison with all of creation. I am baptized in this river, cupping my hands to offer others a cool drink of God’s living water. I savor intimate moments of quiet presence, of sharing stories, of soothing wounds, as hearts melt into one and flow back to autumns river of unending love.

This meditation is timely for me. I was just talking to a colleague about the legacy we each will leave. Think about all the lives the lady in the pink robe may have touched and all of the opportunities that lie before the baby boy. Lord willing, I have 20-30 more years in my healthcare career. Still yet, I’m challenged to make the most of each day and hopefully to be a blessing to someone along the journey.
