Journal of Sacred Work

Caregivers have superpowers! Radical Loving Care illuminates the divine truth that caregiving is not just a job. It is Sacred Work.

About

Like lots of people, I’ve relied mostly on the quotes of others to describe my life philosophy. I decided to frame my life philosophy in terms of my own language. I encourage you do do the same as a spiritual exercise.
Here are some of the things I believe as expressed in ten principles:

  • On Love: Live love, not fear. Love is everything. If I fill my cup with Love, there is no room for anything else. Accordingly, all my principles are informed by my belief in Radical Loving Care.
  • On Leadership: The most important job of a healthcare leader is to take care of the people who take care of people. This means living by principles not rules. Principles are for people. Rules are for robots.
  • On Self-Care: Take care of yourself so you can take care of others…

  • On Gratitude & Forgiveness: Gratitude is the mother of joy. Forgiveness is the father of grace.
  • On Energy & Joy: Where attention goes, energy flows. Change your attention and you change your life. Joy is what matters, not happiness.
  • On Compassion: Compassion is not a finite liquid to be measured out in cubic centimeters. Compassion is the life blood of Love and the deepest expression of our humanity.
  • On Humor: Take your work seriously, not yourself. Laughter is essential to joy.
  • On Grief: Live grief as an essential season in your life.
  • On Surrender: Surrendering to Love is the most difficult human act, and the most important. It is the only way we can express humility. Prayer aligns us with humility and Love.
  • On Art & Music: All of great art is an expression of Love. When we engage with art, we have met Love.

Every great caregiver lives my first principle: Love, not fear. If you were to make up three or five or ten principles of your life, how would you describe them? Which one would be the most important?

The only truth I know is Love.
I want to Love my life away.
My only true purpose is to be of Loving service.
Meditation is my path to peace.
    Everything is spiritual.
We are all connected, what happens to one, happens to all.
Live in daily awareness of death and become fully alive.
A spiritual belief that I hold as true is that whatever we do to another we actually do to ourselves.
In the day to day of life, there are many things that can place barriers between people such as differences in social standing, material wealth, job titles, etc. Yet, when we see through spiritual eyes, we are all God’s children. I do not have much of value to offer in this world except my love.
Mandala as spiritual art form is the Sanskrit word for sacred circle. To me the circle symbolizes God; there is no beginning, and no end, of spirit eternal and Love unending. The center of the circle symbolizes pure spiritual light and unity. It is here that we are born and set out on our journey in life, to follow our own unique path and to return this source at journey’s end.
I live in awareness of how all our differing parts are necessary in creating wholeness. Our shadowy more fragile aspects are to be approached tenderly, with Loving-kindness, and acceptance.
My journey is an inward one and I seek to awaken. Listening, I discover my true nature.
Surrendering to God’s will I release all judgments, and perceptions that separate me from you. Once known as stranger now I can only see you as dear one.
I am grateful for divine grace and unconditional love that is at the core of everything.

WOW! Both of these lists of quotes are beautiful and profound — like the people through whom they come. I’ve never really sat down and tried to pull together a list of the basic principles of my life philosophy. At least some of the things that would show up, though, would include:
    People are what matter.
Life always involves letting go of something.
    Love is a journey.
Every moment is a creative act.
I can either live dying, or die living.
Upon reflection I would find more of these basic principles . . . I’m sure. But it’s good to start the day reminding myself of what guides my own life. Thanks, Erie and Liz!

Here are a few things that come to the top of my mind.
On Love – Love is. We often tie an object to this sentence which changes the focus to the object. Love’s very existence is impossible to comprehend.
On Acceptance – Love calls us to gracious acceptance without judgement.
On Nature – The world is ours to be free in. Respect it, nurture it, enjoy it.
On Myself – I am a unique and divine gift who has a definite purpose. My joy comes from unwrapping that gift along my journey and discovering the mysteries of the divine in me.
On Others – Live so that others are grateful for my presence.
On Relatives – You are my brother and you are my sister.
This is a great reflection and meditative practice. Thank you!
