I had the great opportunity to be reminded this week of the importance of presence as I attended your retreat. When we talk of presence, often it is described as something that is turned on and off as if it were a light switch. What I am discovering and cultivating is the essence of being a healing presence. That whenever I am with someone else, I am able to provide a comfortable and healing space for us. That means that I must also be present to my own needs and honor them. Portions of a poem entitled “The Winter of Listening” by David Whyte are present to me today.
    What is precious
    inside us does not
    care to be known
    by the mind
    in ways that diminish
    its presence.
    All those years
    listening to those
    who had
    nothing to say.
    All those years
    forgetting
    how everything
    has its own voice
    to make
    itself heard.
    All those years
    forgetting
    how easily
    you can belong
    to everything
    simply by listening.

Whenever I think of presence and grace I think of my dear friend and physician Mary Setonis. She brings grace and light wherever she goes. She is a true healer.
