Recently, I watched two commentators speak Cal Thomas and Bob Beckel (www.c-spanarchives.org/library/) about their new book called “Common Ground.” These two colleagues, and friends are of different political persuasions as one is a republican and the other democrat. Their main point is this, we should be able to express differing viewpoints without the need to name call and insult the other as this only fuels division and polarizes our country. They believe this polarization threatens to destroy our great nation. Why does this occur? Simple, sensationalism in news sells and makes lots of money for those involved. In order to solve difficult problems we need to seek our commonality and be able to listen to one another to gain insight and understanding. To just to argue our point without listening and degrade the other with unkind words only paralyzes and prevents any real progress. These days I find it difficult to watch the rhetoric on typical news channels. However, I found it refreshing to listen to these gentlemen encouraging true dialogue and I hope they capture the attention, hearts, and minds of us Americans.

In our search for meaning, we engage in worthy causes. We give of ourselves to somehow make this a better place. Yet where do we go and what do we say when all the doing is gone. When facing the terminality of our lives, Who is it at our center to sustain us. Hopefully in the midst of our “doing” we are tending to our “being”. I offer this poem of Rilke:
“She who reconciles the ill-matched threads
of her life, and weaves them gratefully
into a single cloth–
it’s she who drives the loudmouths from the hall
and clears it for a different celebration
where the one guest is you.
In the softness of evening
it’s you she receives.
You are the partner of her loneliness,
the unspeaking center of her monologues.
With each disclosure you encompass more
and she stretches beyond what limits her,
to hold you.”
