The Journal’s valentine message was an a
caring tribute to family love, which continues to resonate with me, as I
happened to receive a letter from my mom on Valentines Day. Mom is one who
keeps the art of letter writing alive and well. I think it is her own unique expression
of spirituality, her distinctive way of spreading Love to others. In the
letter’s envelope, I was delighted to discover several little newspaper
clippings she had been saving up to send. As I read each article that she had
so thoughtfully hand-picked just for me, it was like receiving a bouquet of
wild flowers. I was curious to know more about what she thought would capture
my interest…

   A short article
described the arrest of a woman for retail theft. She was caught stealing a
pair of running socks and was held until the police arrived.  Apparently, she is a veteran of minor shoplifting
incidents. Police described her this way: “She is quite a pleasant lady. She is
always very cooperative.
Officer Michael Chesenak responded to another theft
at a pharmacy. He recognized this same woman on a surveillance camera and
contacted her to give back the stolen items. She returned the candle but
claimed she had used the hair dye. These are the big crime happenings in small
town Vermont.
Another clipping identified flowering plants that can brighten ones indoors in the gloom of
winter and offered tips on how best to care for them. A ‘Money Smart’ clipping
outlined what financial records you need to keep and which ones you can toss. An
article featured a new ‘Artist Loft Bed & Breakfast’ located in a historic
building on Main Street.
Colorful photos revealed a window view of the Wantastiquet Mountain along the unspoiled Connecticut River as well as a glimpse of charming room
furnishings. The writer provided a first hand account of his experience as a
guest on his relaxed weekend get away.
Last, mom included a couple of ‘Family
Circus’ cartoon comics that added a touch of humor. I am grateful
for the ways mom connects me to home, to my roots, to family. Mom, (Elizabeth
Dorothea Sorensen) is 92 today, February 17.
   Did I mention that
she is someone who never forgets a birthday? She sends hundreds of birthday
cards and letters each year to our large multi-generational family, relatives,
and friends alike. As an expression of her exceptionally generous spirit, she
wholeheartedly devotes her energy to keeping up the tradition of remembering
others. Love flows through her in a river of thoughtfulness.

    Dear Grandma (and Great Grandma),
It is a rare and difficult attainment to grow older gracefully and happily, and yet you have done it so well! You are an inspiration to us all! I can only hope that I am able to raise my children to be the wonderful and caring s all of your children turned out to be.
You can only perceive real beauty in a person as they get older, and everybody that knows you sees that beauty in you! Have a wonderful birthday and hope to see you soon!

    Happy Birthday, Aunt Elizabeth
It’s been about twenty years since I saw you at my father’s funeral, but I think of you as a friend because of the care you spend in sharing your insight in your letters and cards. You are one of the few people I know that share your news so generously. This year we had a real treat – you made a small error in your card and sent a second one. I quote “An apology is due for renaming Cara as Noel. I had a momentary lapse of my ‘great memory.’ It’s good I didn’t call Cara Gertrude or Hester’” We all just love the way you sent that second card, so sensitive to Cara’s feelings, but even more your wicked sense of humor. Everyone loved it. I think of you as the matriarch of “the Lawlers,” making sure that we all know what is happening to our great extended family. Much love and best wishes to you. I hope you have many more birthdays!!!

    Dear Mom,
There are so many ways I feel blessed to have you as my mom but what stands out most is how gracefully you have moved through life. Early years growing up years hold so many good memories of family and friends. The Sorensen house seemed to be the hub for entertaining friends and relatives with good food, good times, and much laughter. Life changed significantly when we moved to Vermont and four of your six children stayed behind. That was a tough transition for me and I wonder what it was like for you? Outwardly, you did not show any signs of turmoil or inner distress but it could not have been easy. You adapted, worked incredibly hard each day to help run our family hotel business and later on our smokehouse, baking hams and other delicacies.
I greatly admire how you take life’s changes in stride, without complaint, without bitterness, you find the good in all situations. Why I have never even heard you say a bad word or curse! There have been some very difficult challenges along the way but you have never lost balance or heart. I love all the little remembrances you keep so clearly in mind of friends and family from long ago. Stories of Sunday outings with your pop going by train to the zoo, and the summers spent in Shenandoah PA. You would sit on the step and await your uncle’s return from work in the coal mines. Oh, how you relished the small treat he would save you from his meager lunch pail. Your jolly Aunt Mary who would come to visit, her hair up in a bun and she would leave her trademark; home baked pies as her parting goodbye. As a pretty young woman, you dressed ever so stylish, and rode the train each day into Manhattan to work for wonderful Mrs. Shultise in her quaint bookstore. Ah and there is so much more…
Most impressive is how gracefully you have aged mom, you have grown older with such acceptance, why you have never even dyed your hair! It is all natural, and a beautiful white color. Naturally and with grace you move through life. Happy birthday, mom and thank you for the rare and precious gift of your love.

(and boy have we all tested the unconditional love part). You have been so sympathetic, caring and supportive through my illness these last 3 years and I really love that you were there for me. Thank You for that and thank you for all the comforting words that you said to me over the last 62 years (almost). You are a wonderful Mom and even a better friend. I Love you Mom, kiss kiss!! Cathy

Arrived from Florida today-missed your birthday by a day. Over the brief years that we have personally met and those other interim years spoken to, the pleasure via “the chat” reminds one that we must protect for our “spoken libraries” And, to us, there is the beloved relay that you have bequeathed and it now occupies a beloved memory- bank coupled with one section of our hearts-the other three sections are reserved for our affection of you. Rather than reiterate those pages, and/or itemizations, suffice it to say that we will reserve those thoughts and questions till next we meet on whatever holy grounds you embrace.
God Bless and many more birthdays we wish to you — for the likes of you is needed by us.
