If Jesus’ life seems exalted in our eyes, if the Messiah seems surrounded with the misty halo of long ago, then the lives of his disciples must seem the same – obscure, mysterious and distant. We know that Jesus held a special love for his disciples and perhaps particularly for John, who some believe was the famous "beloved disciple."
The Bible offers us the well-known Gospel of John and the somewhat less frequently read three letters of John that appear toward the end of the New Testament. In John’s first letter, he delivers line after line of life-shaking truth. For all of us who grew up with the belief that God was unknowable and indescribable, the apostle John gives us the best definition of God that has ever been written. And he only takes three words to do it. "God is love," he tells us in 1 John 4:16, "and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them."  There is no greater wisdom than this, if only we can open our hearts to it. Listen to the power of this declaration from John, "There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear…" Inside this truth is the birth of Radical Loving Care’s central statement which calls us to Live Love, not fear. Love drives away fear. Without Love, we are continuously vulnerable to fear’s dragon fire.

-Erie Chapman

1) Do you agree that God is Love?

2) How often do you find yourself living in fear instead of in Love?

Yes, I am sure that God is Love. When I see the smile in strangers’ faces, the sun on my face and beautiful flowers, trees and things from nature – I know that is God’s work. When I am unsure of what direction to go in, or what to believe – I know that God will tie up these loose ends. This knowledge alones is what allows me to perservere when I sometimes think of giving up.
When I encounter fear, it is because I’ve been caught off guard and haven’t had the opportunity to prepare for the incident. Since sponteneity has its own agenda – I can only hope I’m quick at the ready.

Yes, I agree that God is love. However I still have trouble letting go of the Old Testament version of God. So if God truly IS love, then why am I still fearful of it? As I mature, I am better able to mold my own understanding, yet some teachings run through the fabric of who we are.
I’m sure I live in fear more often than I even realize. At best I steer myself to living in gratitude and grace. In those places, fear cannot tarry very long.

This is a beautiful message and the only one I need to awaken. For the only truth, I know is Love.
So often, I arm myself with an attitude of protection and defensiveness when I feel that I am right and that I must stand my ground… no matter the cost. I am learning that none of this really matters, as the little dramas of life are not real. If you ask something of me that I perceive unreasonable I will try to do it anyway. When you are angry, I will see it as a call for Love. I will accept you without judgment and I will forgive you, because I can see what you are beyond the confusion; Love. However, I treat you, I treat myself and I can only find my way to Love through you. And there is no need for guilt…as we are guiltless in that God created us in Love, for Love. I only need to open my heart and shift my mistaken perceptions to recognize and remember what we are. This is what I am learning…you are an image of me and I of you, and together we are of One spirit.

Simply, God is Love and Love is God. We can see Love, feel love, touch love at any time we open our eyes and heart.
