Caregivers have superpowers! Radical Loving Care illuminates the divine truth that caregiving is not just a job. It is Sacred Work.

About

Soft_rose_2_2They are not long, the days of wine and roses: /Out of a misty dream/Our path emerges for a while, then closes/Within a dream. – Ernest Dowson (1867-1900)

A good painting or photo of a rose should not need any words. But, I don’t know if this image (at left) appears as stunning to you as she does to me. The way her face leans to the light, the way her petals reach to touch each other, the stiff strength of her stem…but, this may not be how you see her.

In 1962, a movie appeared called "Days of Wine and Roses." It was written by J.P. Miller, directed by Blake Edwards, and starred the great Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick and it won lots of awards. It was such a sensuous title. But, the plot traced a couple drowning in alcohol. The roses fell away, the wine took over.
We each know that wine can be a lovely compliment to our lives or a treacherous poison. In spite of all our knowledge about alcoholism as a disease, we still pass judgment on those caught in the jaws of this illness.
I wish for you days of roses mixed, every so often, with a touch (or two) of wine (unless alcohol is something to which your body chemistry may be allergic.) Caregivers need relief from the challenges of their work. Sometimes, it’s difficult to slow down and appreciate beauty unless we enjoy a taste of wine as well as a whiff of a gorgeous rose.

Like roses, wine is a gift that requires patience and presence to fully appreciate. It cannot be gulped like water or swallowed like a soft drink. To fully live the wine, it must be savored, its bouquet preparing the pallate, liquid gently rolling across the tongue and then down. It too requires years of meticulous care before the grape vine yields a bottle. Wine and roses are a wonderful ways for us to slow our pace and be present in the moment.

Peace is so attainable to us. To be in the moment of peacefulness, perhaps could be the smell of a rose or a sip of wine. Peace can come to us by closeing our eyes and allowing the spirit to come to us. The rose or the wine perhaps are a vehichle for us to allow us to find that moment. Life is busy and we must remember to close our eyes and prepare for peace. It is God’s promise to us.
