“The sky is falling”, they say. “The
world as we know it is coming to an end.” Look at the economic bail-outs, government rescues, bi-partisan blaming and presidential
posturing. Markets roller coaster day-to-day. Most of us watch in confusion and
fear as no one provides an explanation or a remedy that we like or fully understand.
Fearful of our future, we watch the news, hug our families, go to sleep each
night and rise again tomorrow.

   MRed_oakeanwhile,
people are confined to their beds in hospice care; the world’s activities a
distant worry. Right now, in this moment, they seek the immeasurable wealth of
a caregiver with warm eyes and an open heart. I have noticed that the squirrel
outside my window is still gathering food and the red oak down the way is
preparing for her tribute to fall. I share this poem from Wendell Berry as
solace for all caregivers to make space for peace in the midst of this storm.

The Peace of Wild Things

When despair grows in me

and I wake in the middle of the night at the least sound

in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,

I go and lie down where the wood drake

rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.

I come into the peace of wild things

who do not tax their lives with forethought

of grief. I come into the
presence of still water.

and I feel above me the day-blind stars

waiting for their light. For a time

I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

    Karen,
Thank you for sharing from your heart and offering up this lovely poem. In the presence of still waters…yes, that is where you take us today.
In the chilly hours and minutes
    Of uncertainty
    I wanna be
In the warm hold of your Loving mind.

Wow, that poem really spoke to my sole. Thankyou Liz for bringing the post to my attention today. Thankyou to Kren for sharing it!!God’s poem about this was very similar ….” The Lord is my shepard, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shawdow of death. I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

Thank you for the reminders that we must learn to still ourselves and our souls to feel at peace during these unsettling times.

I love this poem Karen. These days when I become anxious over the economy, world conflict, the presidential election, or my mother’s health, I have been reminding myself to live love, not fear. Resting with the peace of wild things is a way to feed our soul so that we may live love, not fear.

Karen your poem choice was perfect, the imagery of the stars above as I come into the presence of still waters put me in a much calmer state of mind, quieting my soul and allowing me to just take a moment for myself. Thank you for sharing

Hi Karen – was so glad to see your connection with this poem. Am a Kentucky native so Berry is a familiar figure, and have had that poem close to my desk for about 15 years. Wonderful solace.
