Journal of Sacred Work

Caregivers have superpowers! Radical Loving Care illuminates the divine truth that caregiving is not just a job. It is Sacred Work.

For as much as government can do and must do, it is ultimately the faith and determination of the American people
upon which this nation relies. It is the kindness to take in a stranger
when the levees break, the selflessness of workers who would rather cut
their hours than see a friend lose their job which sees us through our
darkest hours. It is the firefighter's courage to storm a stairway
filled with smoke, but also a parent's willingness to nurture a child,
that finally decides our fate.

For a little over 18 minutes on January 20, 2009, tens of millions actually paused in silence to listen to a speech. Traffic stopped. Surgeries were delayed. School days were interrupted. Perhaps people paused to hear words from our brand new President because he understands that "…it is ultimately the faith and determination of the American people upon which this nation rests." I refer to our President as the new Caregiver-in-Chief because that is what every President has the opportunity to become.
Our President's have more opportunity than anyone else to set the tone for our nation's culture. This has been most evident during the terms of the great Presidents. Washington refused to be crowned a king and, when he refused to run for a third term, signaled that America would be a culture of democracy. Lincoln appealed to "the better angels of our nature" and led our country through the valley of the shadow and into the sunlight of a culture of unity. Franklin Roosevelt spoke to American's in fireside chats and, in so doing, helped Americans understand themselves as a culture of one nation.
President Obama has the chance to champion Love over fear. And that is exactly what he spoke in his inaugural address – that "We gather because we have chosen hope over fear."

Mr. Obama has the chance to live the highest calling of a caregiver by how he responds to the challenge spoken by inaugural poet Elizabeth Alexander: "What if the mightiest word is love, love beyond marital, filial,
national. Love that casts a widening pool of light. Love with no need
to preempt grievance."

Imagine. What if these words of love traveled through the heart's of all of America's caregivers and into the souls of people in need. This is what a Caregiver-in-Chief can do. It remains for us to follow this path of Love in this new generation.
What do you think? Can our President be effective as our Caregiver-in-Chief?

His is a message of Love, unity and rising to meet the challenges that face our nation through responsibility and service. It makes me wonder…if you have been speaking with him while he dreams at night? President Obama’s is a visionary leader that sees beyond the limits of self. Perhaps that is why Love’s light is flowing through him so freely and capturing the hearts, minds and spirits of our nation’s people. He is a man who is called. He does not minimize the gravity of our nation’s and the world’s problems but he recognizes the strength of the human spirit to endure and rise above adversity. He calls to us in a way that we can hear and respond to meet great need with great Love.
My friend Manjeet stopped in yesterday and spoke eloquently yet said it so simply, “just Love, people need our Love.”

Yesterday’s ceremonies were full of hope and excitement. Every face in the crowd exemplified the basic need of all of us. We need to be loved. We need a leader who can launch a vision and pave the way to a brighter future in which love can be expressed. This president may very well be the Caregiver in Chief. I pray for his courage and commitment to his ideals.

President Obama appears to be a True Caregiver. I watched snipets of his inaugural activies on various television programs last night. From taking the walk to personally greet the crowds, to embracing those (not in the front of the room) at the celebration luncheon, and dancing with our enlisted soldiers – I realized that he wants to be a regular part of our lives. He stands along side us in our daily life.
When you position yourself where others can reach out to you, you are a True Caregiver. Yes, there is much work to be done by this one person, and we shouldn’t grade him just yet. But knowing that he is one the same ground as we are makes me confident and hopeful that this is one Great Caregiver.

I believe the true testament to Obama’s message of love and responsibility, and how it was embraced by the millions of people who travelled to D.C. just to be in the same city for the inauguration, was the fact that there were no police arrests for any reason before, during or after the ceremonies. None. Nada. No disturbances, no scuffles, no fights for space with so many people trying to find the best spot to see and hear what was happening. That’s a beautiful message for all.
