Journal of Sacred Work

Caregivers have superpowers! Radical Loving Care illuminates the divine truth that caregiving is not just a job. It is Sacred Work.

About

At the Journal, we turn often to the gifts of David Whyte for the wisdom and art he brings. His writing defines both the challenge of life and the high strength we seek to meet that challenge as we encounter "that fierce embrace" with ourselves.
Thanks to a reader for bringing this particular poem of Whyte's to my attention.

Self Portrait

It doesn't interest me if there is one God
or many gods.
I want to know if you belong or feel
abandoned.
If you know despair or can see it in others.
I want to know
if you are prepared to live in the world
with its harsh need
to change you. If you can look back
with firm eyes
saying this is where I stand. I want to know
if you know
how to melt into that fierce heat of living
falling toward
the center of your longing. I want to know
if you are willing
to live, day by day, with the consequence of love
and the bitter
unwanted passion of your sure defeat.

I have heard, in that fierce embrace, even
the gods speak of God.

How poignant, “In the encounter of that fierce embrace with ourselves,” How frightening this can be, to risk the perils of fire, to enter in to the depths of our being without running away. Yet, how deep our longing to meet the truth of ourselves in others, to be known, revealed, and accepted. I want to awaken to what is real in me and in you.
As Whyte’s poem reaches out an impassioned hand, Dakota’s “Self Portrait” photo returns a matching glove of intimacy, a perfect fit. How beautiful is Love when shared.

After a discussion with my colleague, Cathy Self, I decided to remove the photograph posted today. She believes it might disturb some and although I don’t believe artistic expression should be determined by fear, I respect her position.

I am so sorry the picture came down as it was a perfect match for the poem. God’s art is expressed all throughout nature and humans attempt to recapture it through poetry, painting, photography, etc. I believe the human body is God’s ultimate expression of love and the most artistically perfect creation. Tasteful nudes are an attempt at capturing God’s flowers in a way that allows the viewer to feel perfect and whole and loved. Thank you for your ongoing attempts at highlighting loving care through the arts.

Well said Karen, I agree, for me the photo is a beautiful artistic expression. I appreciate the sensitivity of the decision.
