Journal of Sacred Work

Caregivers have superpowers! Radical Loving Care illuminates the divine truth that caregiving is not just a job. It is Sacred Work.

About

It can be of the most sacred and personal of encounters for Catholics. It occurs in the shadowed space of the confessional. It is there that the faithful may choose to unburden their troubled or broken hearts. Protestants sometimes call this "giving it to God." In fact, every faith has a way of offering followers a path to bring our darker secrets into the light.

Of course, we all carry secrets. Some are beautiful and nurturing. Some are open wounds struggling for healing. We seek not only forgiveness but a place to put the pain of secrets that burden us.

The moon 4 fl   I wrote a sentence-poem about where our secrets are held, using the sun and moon as metaphors for God and for our hearts. (I took the photograph while walking along the Atlantic shore.)

When we give our troubles to God, Love sends back rich gifts.

Secrets of the Moon

   You tell me that
the moon understands a broken heart; that he was flung into existence to absorb our pain & whisper that we are loved.

How tired he must be, how scared with killings & soaked in torture’s tears.

I’ve sent the moon enough of my own small woes & know he

must have tucked them into his back pocket with other minor complaints.

It's all scattered on that dark side, isn’t it? You ‘round the corner from that shining grace & there they are – the embers of broken hearts, the wreckage of betrayal, the frozen bones of every disappointment, the ugly edges of ridiculed dreams.

The moon's shine is all reflection.

Yet, some heart must live within this servant of the sun. He is as patient as you say. Hands in his pockets, he watches us now, holds our secrets in his silent turning as he receives the sun & sends it along.

Magnificent Erie. I’ve missed your poetry. I thought the moon was only my companion but seems as though the world looks to her for comfort and solace. 🙂 Thank you so much for this today. It helps so much.

I can’t help but notice the gorgeous harvest moon shining down tonight as I travel into this depth of meaning. Your image of moonlight illuminating across the dark vast ocean to greet her shore is exquisite. A real favorite of mine.
We experience healing when we can unburden our hearts without fear of judgment. When we share our pain, we discover that we are not alone after all. I share the following passage from A Course in Miracles because it resonates with me and perhaps it will for you.
“Its kindly light shows all things from another point of view, reflecting the thought system that arises from knowledge and making return to God not only possible but inevitable.”

Thank you Rev. Erie. Beautiful poem on forgiveness. It is a comfort to know that we always have a chance to unburden our hearts without fear of judgment once we miss the mark. Amazing Grace how sweet the sound once was lost but now am His.

Erie, what a dark, yet intriguing character you have created in the Moon metaphor; I enjoyed this! The Moon is my private caregiver, as I empty myself of the day’s baggage. I catch myself staring up into that dark neighborhood with my own questions and secrets. With the upcoming full moon any day now, I’ll again seek out his company…

Diana Navarro, one of Spain’s foremost singers and balladeers sings a woeful song of lost love. In her lyrics she says “I’ve told the moon all about our love, so when I cry to her at night, she will know how much you meant to me.”
I have long regarded Mother Moon not as a healer or confessional because the act of confession implies that we have done wrong, healer implies that we are diseased.Rather, I see her as the palm of the extended hand of unfettered friendship that stands by us without judging, imposing her rules of behavior or giving unsolicited advice. Instead she envelops us in her refreshing coolness, allowing us to forget the din and clamor of the sun and instead bask in the beauty of the sounds of her darkness and gift us with a special sight that is a feast for the mind as well as the optics. This slow moving glimpse reminds us that a distinct life continues while the worries that we face during the heat of the day pause, sometimes only to to roar once again.
If we listen closely, we hear her soothing song in the wind, the rain, the beading of the dew. She allows us to understand how the hottest day starts slowly and beautifully. She hopes that we can appreciate the dawn so that we are not intimidated by the glare of the day and look forward once again to her company and anticipate the privilege of once again being offered the strong grip of her hello.
