Recently, I attended a Health System Values in Action Award Celebration for caregivers. The facilitator welcomed our honored guests by sharing the Miriam-Webster definition of inspiration. As the afternoon progressed we were all inspired by the passionate expressions of these caregivers of Light.

Definition of Inspiration:

  • A divine
influence or action on a person believed to qualify him or her to receive
    and communicate sacred revelation
  • The action or power of moving
    the intellect or emotions
  • The act of influencing or
    suggesting opinions
  • The act of
    drawing in;
specifically the drawing of air into the
    lungs

I love
this definition and the connection made to breathing. When I pay attention
to this act of breathing, of inspiration, it seems to me, that I am in a state
of receptivity. This gift, freely given is one I do not have to think about or attempt
to control.

When we focus our energy on consciously breathing
in and out we begin to experience a calming effect
in the rise and fall of our
chest
. In the receiving and giving back, we surrender to life's natural rhythms.

In
contemplative prayer, breathing is a doorway into communion
with the divine. It is in this quiet space of listening and through the breath
of life that we begin to connect with our source. The effects of mindfulness are
revitalizing and healing. As we become still we connect with God’s Love. The stillness
is not a withdrawal from life but instead inspires us to reach out to others
with compassion. According to Franciscan, priest Richard Rohr, “Those who
connect with God’s love are compelled to take action, and are motivated by love
to try and bring about social justice."

Awakening means, “Keeping your heart and mind space open long
enough for the mind to see other hidden material. Our rational mind judges,
controls and analyzes instead of seeing, tasting and loving. This is exactly
why it cannot be present in the naked now. The mind … loves to process
things. The key to stopping this game is, quite simply, peace, silence or
stillness.
This was always seen as
God’s primary language… I would even say that on a practical level, silence
and God will be experienced simultaneously — and even as the same thing.”
-Rohr

In loving remembrance of a radiant spirit Christine Sanchez RN, beloved friend and family member of the St. Joseph Home Health Network. Chris is truly an inspiration to us. Through her infinite grace, kind and compassion heart she touched each of our lives in uniquely beautiful ways.

Inspiration being linked to breathing is such a new concept to me – yet, now it is so obvious – how ‘spirit’ is at the centre of inspiration. Only too well do we know that when we are with inspirational people something within is ignited – as though Spirit is communicating with Spirit – in the silence that is of God. Thank you Liz for your sharing and reflection as well as your calm and peaceful painting. YOU are an inspiration.

Thank you for sharing this insight on inspiration. It is a gift from above to be one for each other. Also to be remembered positively by who we are while we’re here on earth is an inspiration for us, left behind.

    Hi Liz,
A definition I always remember is Inspired means to be in-spirit. Inspiration for me has always seemed to come from that aspect of myself that” knows”. Earlier in my life that aspect seemed very readily available, definitely not a separate thing and because my usual mode was naturally a quiet more introspective one, intuition “the inner teacher” seemed normal. Why didn’t everyone have this I wondered? Today I am sporadically experiencing a renewal or reconnection of this aspect. Most of the reading and searching in the end has only led me further from the “experience” of it. Made what had been normal seem difficult, and what was meant to help or direct alignment of mind with spirit left me confused. Even the courses use of the terms ego and holy spirit,in my mind, can feel confusing. In the end language can be used for synthesis or analysis, to knit together or tear apart but whichever the case the “map is not the territory “

What a lovely, quiet reflection on such a priceless gift, the art of inspiration. I learned much from this reflection: how the simple act of breathing and being aware of our inner self can bring calmness and peace within, moving into contemplative prayer which then guides one to continue receiving inspration, and finally awakening to the silent beauty of pure love which exists everywhere. And, with the clarity from this exercise, we are receptive to take it all in.
Chris Sanchez was a rare gem; she had a beautiful disposition, light and laughter in her eyes and heart and she was a true gift. I’ll really miss her…

I am new to this format of communication, but I am quite touched by this. As a nurse and a single Mom who is also a Light Bearer, I am grateful for this opportunity to deepen my compassion and connect with others who think and feel as I do. Liz you are a remarkable teacher and artist. I hope to spend more time with you. Blessings for your friend Chris and her family.
