About

IMG_seasons Everything the Power of the World does is done in a circle. The sky is round, and I have heard that the earth is round like a ball, and so are all the stars. The wind, in its greatest power whirls. Birds make their nest in circles, for theirs is the same religion as ours. The sun comes forth and goes down again in a circle. The moon does the same and both are round. Even the seasons form a great circle in their changing, and always come back again to where they were. The life of a man is a circle from childhood to childhood, and so it is in everything where power moves. Our tepees were round like the nests of birds, and these were always set in a circle, the nation's hoop." –
Black Elk

Circlesleaf What is it about a circle that brings us toward wholeness? When we gather in a circle, the energy naturally shifts as  intimacy forms. In  circle, people face one another, which enhances communication and creates a sense of inclusiveness and connection. Circles are equalizing for without positions of power barriers of hierarchy simply disappear.

A circle encompasses one's heart center; the essence of one's spiritual light.  This is the intersection where opposites converge and dualism transmutes into union. Where two halves that once perceived  separately remember their origin of  being One. Circles invite the sacred to manifest in the fullness and emptiness of the moment. There is great mystery to be discovered in circles. It is here that God turns around to reveal Love's radiant face.

"Ah,  I have gotten the hint: There is  something about circles that the Beloved likes." -Hafiz

joni mitchell said it nicely in her song …circle game…a classic…
….and the seasons they go round and round and the painted ponies go up and down ….we’re captive on the carosel of time…we can’t return, we can only look behind from where we came and go round and round and round in the circle game….

“When we gather in a circle, the energy naturally shifts as intimacy forms”. Just like tonight, my kids with 2 best friends sat on the floor in a circle as they played “Apples to Apples”. They started being serious with the aim to be the winner of the game… as it progressed, I enjoyed listening to the laughter that echoed in our living room. In addition to the fun they’re having, they learned each others preferences and differences. What a great time spending with friends and siblings gathered round in circle. Liz, thank you for your beautiful Mandala, I am borrowing it for now.

After reading your offering about circles I also thought of Joni Mitchell’s song and found myself singing it all day long. Today I awoke with another feeling about the cyclic circlings of life. I felt grateful for the Beloved’s preference for circles. The predictability of these patterns is part of my learning to trust life…to trust the Mystery. Knowing that all paradox and chaos is contained withing a great wheel of change…light turning to dark to light; life, death, rebirth….is comforting. I can trust when the sun departs that it will return again…in fact…I can just take it for granted. This is a fundamental blessing.

Thank you for all your wonderful reflections on my essay! Also, I am sharing this comment sent to me by a friend via e-mail, as I thought it was interesting and I had not ever heard of this. There are so many similarities in the symbols that we use to express our spiritual nature, (even the term Mandorla is very close to the Sanscrit word Mandala. I love it!
My friend wrote, “Interesting Liz, Have you ever heard of the Christian symbol, Mandorla? Its the almond shape that is formed when two circles overlap symbolizing the reconciliation of opposites. “the Mandorla binds together that which was torn apart and made unwhole—-unholy. Quote from{Owning your own Shadow}.”
Thank you for your blessings, dear friends. ~liz

Encircling; Liz, Thank you. Your mandala drew me circling deeper into myself. As well as reflecting on mandalas, mandorlas and the Circle Song I was led into joyful memories of circle dancing. What capacity they have to draw us to the Centre, that is a still point in our Circle of Life. My hope is that each of us can take ourselves into the Dance of “I have a Dream” and move with the motions drawing us ever closer to the encircling God of Life. Fabulous and inspiring Liz. As usual, thank you.

Liz, your loving reflection led me to meditation this morning. The video touched on so much of the beauty in life, too. I’ll have to pay more attention to the wind swirls; I was caught up in them over the weekend as I watched the colors fly!

Then there is the infinity symbol ∞ for “unbounded space, time, or quantity” that swirls us into the timelessness of the cosmos, which itself is a spiral of circles to the infinite All There Is. I like the fact that the author of the video includes a crop circle, whose mysterious appearances baffle definition from our rational mind— and most suspect its circles are made by beings other than ourselves, no less beloved by an infinite loving God. I like the word “infinite” because for me it represents infinite circles of possibilities – we just have to decide to be open to to the circles that surround us and chose wisely. Thank you Liz –as always beautiful insights.
