Journal of Sacred Work

Caregivers have superpowers! Radical Loving Care illuminates the divine truth that caregiving is not just a job. It is Sacred Work.

About

The greatest refuge in life is beauty. Remarkably, I tend to forget this obvious truth until I feel myself immersed in something ugly – violence, injustice, or just a bad mood. It is then that some image of beauty rises up to rescue me.

Sometimes, that image appears in something as everyday as the birds in my backyard. Other times, it may appear in something as gorgeous as Beethoven's Piano Concerto #4 or something else human-made like one of Liz Wessel's mandalas.

I have three lines posted on the mirror I look into each morning and none of them specifically includes the word Beauty. They are Love, Laugh, Let Go. Which of those words helps the most?

The answer, for me, is the second one. Obviously, Love is the biggest and most important word there is. But, Love does not always send me clear instructions.

Letting go is a great concept. It is also the hardest for many people to live.

When my eyes settle on the single word "laugh," however, some kind of lovely energy passes through me. Laughing acts like a trigger awakening both Love and the experience of letting go.

It's difficult to feel up tight when we're laughing. And it's almost impossible to take yourself seriously when good humor shakes open your heart.

As you can see, I am already taking myself too seriously. The worst writing I do in the Journal comes when I try to hand out instructions.

But, here's a suggestion anyway. Try putting a word or two up on your mirror. Make it a different word every day for a week. At the end of seven days, see which ones were most helpful.

This sounds like one of those big self-help things I usually don't like, but it has helped me. In fact, maybe it's time for me to change the words I see each morning so that powerful words don't lose their energy by being repeated too often.

We all know that beauty and ugliness flood the world. The more I see of ugliness, the more I know of beauty. And there is no more comforting word to me than this one: Beauty.

Time for a new word. "Beauty" will appear on my mirror tomorrow morning so that it will be the first word I see.

How much wonderful energy flows through your heart when you contemplate that single six-letter word and what it means to you?

Laughing is the mechanism of letting go; then we can let the LOVE in! We live in a world of contrasts, don’t we. Someone said, how would we know beauty if we did not perceive ugly things? So I’ve come to see contrasts as necessary to really see what love, beauty, peace, happiness, etc. etc. is. The other trick is to see the beauty in what we persceive as ugly, to feel the love instead of hate, to laugh inspite our tears…
After you have lived with your word “Beauty” on your mirror for a while, why not leave no words there and see how many of your mirror words remain consciously inside you? I think the reflection in your own mirror will show you love, laughter, and beauty! :>

I think my word for the week will be perspective…I think that word will require more than one day …As I read your post I thought of things that make me laugh, yet in the same room at the same time, that same thing irritates another person. What I love about one person, is not loved by another. I reflect to this time of year when people surrounding me are busy shopping and making family plans. My year brings unemployment for my husband and deployment for my son. Yet I must keep my perspective every day to count my blesings, Erie, I like that you still” talk to the man in the mirror”. That person can be our best friend or worst enemy. May the concentration on reflecting on a positive word be my blessing also! Thankyou Erie for always guiding us. You are beautiful!!!

I truly appreciate your offering today, Erie, and I thank you for your kind affirmation! Last night the movie, “Young Frankenstein” was on T.V. Although, I’ve seen it more than once, I still find this movie pleasingly funny. Laughter is healing. On the other side of laughter is tears, which is similar in nature. Sometimes we laugh until we cry. Recently, I found myself laughing at seemingly inappropriate moments and I noticed that I was actually very close to tears. Both laughter and tears contain great emotion, well up within us, and can be difficult to control. I guess that is why they carry with them a release and relief.
I have done as you suggested Erie and posted a word on my mirror. Today my word is ‘awaken.’ This is my daily prayer; that I may awaken to see the beauty that is in all, and perhaps in those unwanted and abandoned parts of myself that I least want to befriend. Yes, a wonderful energy does flow through my heart when I contemplate that six letter little word…

I love this little quote and wanted to share with you all…seems to fit in today’s commentaries.

This sounds fun Rev. Erie :). Tonight I will imagine the word miracle on our mirror. As I will get ready for work that would be my positive powerful word for the day…

My word for this current time is “life”. I’m humbled by the recent passages of family members loved ones and and during this season I want to feel the Recognition of Life each day. Especially now, when the skies are often gray, the winds are brisk and the leaves (some with gorgeous colors) are traveling.
That being said, I am embracing everything I can think of: fellowship at work, smelling holiday trees and flowers, looking up at the stars, watching old movies, sharing quiet smiles with strangers and taking in as much as the fan that of I am of life as possible. Life is short – make good use of it…
