Journal of Sacred Work

Caregivers have superpowers! Radical Loving Care illuminates the divine truth that caregiving is not just a job. It is Sacred Work.

About

Workman X 1 focal color - erie chapman   There is that tiresome old phrase, "The devil is in the details." But, it's in the details where God's Love may appear most vividly.

Find Beauty in the leaf and you have found her in the entire forest. Explore joy in the crest of a wave and you have discovered the majesty of the ocean. Find your compassion in the tears of another and you have glimpsed God.

It requires the stillness of Elijah to feel the rich textures that weave through great music, the calm of meditation to taste the colors in a glass of Communion wine or to hear beauty's song playing in the eyes of one you love.

If we rush we will miss the joy of life's jasmine scent. Velocity can steal from us the offerings of the forest awakening at dawn or the sight of the hospital windows lit by the low angle of the evening sun.

To hear the heart of another, we must fall silent. In this presence, we can listen for the breath beneath the words.

Worker red x 3 This is not about what the workman does. It is not about his tools or his end-of-the-day fatigue. It is about the long, red X of the safety harness pressed against his back, the hint of matching scarlet in the stop sign beyond, the wrinkles that furrow his tee shirt, the white that ricochets off car and helmet and sky and the letters S.T.O. & P.

If we can find the joy in things as "slight" as these, perhaps we can hear more deeply the needs of our own heart. Maybe we will be better able to meet the needs of others.

This is not about the cost of a silver tea service or whether the lace on the sideboard needs Silver and lace trimming. It is about the shine at the right edge of the platter, the delicacy of lace, the reflection of the two bowls, the feast away from the food and what ever other elegance you may experience.

Most of all, this is about learning to see with the eyes of our hearts.

Our world fast becomes wearying if we can see a fence only for its function without recognizing Fence leaf detail #2 - erie chapman copyright 2011the whorls in its wood, the scent of cut lumber, the occasional leaf that reaches between the slats to wink at us.

A camera helps me to see these details. But, the camera is only one way to focus the heart's attention.

What I hope is that you will see in a deeper way this day and night. For if we recognize Love in this world, we can only want to serve her – not for personal gain, but because we are in Love and Love can only love

The world is drenched in riches. We have the gift of our senses. Neither matters unless we marry the two in a new experience of God.

Thank you Rev. Erie, in these “slight details” of joy, in no time life’s jasmine scent be missed… for what matters is, is why does my patient screams every moment she can? In every story she may tell, in every hint of concern she expresses, in every little time she clings on, for me to stay close… that matters. The hope and control he would like to endure, or in silence he would like to embrace… in these we learn to see God’s love most clearly.

    So touching a response, Marily.
I find this to be such a splendid post today. I am learning from you still Erie, but with a new medium, your photography. As I read your descriptions I notice so much more than with my initial first glance. It requires my full attention to see into Love’s essence; a seeing that extends beyond my typical assumptions… What a glorious expansiveness Love offers, “For if we recognize Love in this world, we can only want to serve her – not for personal gain, but because we are in Love and Love can only love.”
Thanks for today’s lovely gift, Rev. Erie.

Perhaps one of your most beautiful essays Erie, both lovely and poignant. I have read it over many times and find something new and astonishing in each reading. Thank you for sharing your gifts of wisdom, insight, beauty and love (to name a few) with all of us.
    Bless you.

Hello Erie, What a truly beautiful essay–I plan to share it with others. My husband is an amateur photographer, and I love looking at and hearing his viewpoint on his photographs. His engineer’s mind sees beauty from, literally, different angles than mine. Thanks for enlightening us with your angles.

Erie, this post goes directly to my heart and enlivens the day. To slow down or stop to pay attention to the numinous quality of each moment is not a self indulgence, it is a necessity for our souls. “Velocity can steal from us the offerings of the forest awakening at dawn…”. In our connection to this sacred moment and its beauty, we rest and are rejuvenated. I so deeply appreciate this day right now. Thank you.

Rev. Chapman, my heart is so warmed by this reflection. In my own world, I approached last weekend, not with hesitation of it’s end but the thought of not seeing the spring unfold to summer. I stared at everything last Saturday morning, and scared the daylights out of my husband, Frank by even taking him in too long. I did not believe it was time, however the heightened awareness of all who speculated made me realize what I do miss with my eyes. All things will happen in God’s time, and I believe I will know when needed.
Yet today, I finally catch up to your reflection (that I’ve so missed). You’ve continued the lesson of taking the world in, above my quick and cheating glances. The details that we must keep near to our hearts so that the love swells up to our grateful faces, smiles and eyes. Yours is a gift I’m always happy to receive…
