My Grandmother in the Stars
By Naomi Shihab Nye

It is possible we will not meet again
on earth. To think this fills my throat
with dust. Then there is only the sky
tying the universe together.

Just now the neighbor’s horse must be standing
patiently, hoof on stone, waiting for his day
to open. What you think of him,
and the village’s one heroic cow
is the knowledge I wish to gather.
I bow to your rugged feet,
the moth-eaten scarves that knot your hair.

Where we live in the world
is never one place. Our hearts,
those dogged mirrors, keep flashing us
moons before we are ready for them.
You and I on a roof at sunset,
our two languages adrift,
heart saying, Take this home with you,
never again,
and only memory making us rich.

When I read this the feeling of comfort and belief of satisfaction comes to me that “We are never alone and never forgotten”…I feel this translates not only to our personal loved ones but also as a caregiver and the many lives we touch each day…
    Beautiful polyprint Liz…

Thank you Liz. The polyprint watercolor suits the poem well. It is what we believe and imagine it is. This poem reminded me of many people whom I growth to love but they no longer around. I thought of them sometimes and gald I was able to do something for them. The rest I leave it in the hands of God 😀

During these quiet days of summer, my memories are coming to light. I realize I’ve no parent or in-law to call and check on; no older loved one to connect to. The moment I saw the title that mentioned “grandmother”, I ached for my “Mama Daisy”.
Thank you for not letting my mind get too far away from reaching for those memories that I love so…

Thank you Liz. Just as the stars are present in the sky, so as our loved ones who have passed this way are still forever so near, we celebrate, there’s joy, love & peace.
