Journal of Sacred Work

Caregivers have superpowers! Radical Loving Care illuminates the divine truth that caregiving is not just a job. It is Sacred Work.

About

Canine caregivers one a  If one dog brings happiness then two must deliver double joy, right? Not always. But it's hard to beat the fun one man can have with father-son Goldendoodles.

We all know the saying about dogs as best friends. Why?

Years ago I stood with Alive Hospice caregivers as they freed single balloons into the morning sky in honor of each patient that had died the past month. The reading of some names brought sighs. But, when the last name was read groans & tears ripped the air. Several were unaware that their hospice dog had died during the night.

These caregivers know how patients bond with canines. "The dog doesn't care if I've lost my hair & look like a skeleton," one patient shared. "They love you no matter what." Canine caregivers 2 (51)

We yearn for unconditional love. Our judgement-free pets offer that. People cannot avoid noticing how disease deforms & patients often apologize for their appearance. Canine caregivers require no apology.

All we need to know about how dogs deliver joy beyond happiness is to conjure one image: A child bursts in on Christmas morning. A new puppy scurries from under the tree & into their arms.

What gorgeous friends and a joy to see the smile they bring to your face, Erie. It is true about dogs, they love so unconditionally and offer such great companionship and comfort. Our beloved pets can bring therapeutic healing as you describe with their caregiving role in hospice as well.
One situation that I read about broke my heart. This past year when a major disaster hit a country, a rescue dog worked tirelessly 24/7 to help to save lives. He worked day and night to find survivors so they could be pulled from the rubble. Eventually he collapsed from exhaustion and gave his life for the sake of others.
Personally, Brandi, a lab who joined our family 2 years ago has so much to teach me about love. She is such a gentle soul that illuminates our family life every day. I love the famous quote, “I want to be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.” I can not think of a better goal in life! 🙂

What a great set of comments, Liz! Thanks also for sharing that terrific saying, “”I want to be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.” What a great form of the Christian message.

Growing up my family did not have many pets. A dog or cat would be a part of our lives now and then, but mostly not. After all the kids had moved out and my dad had moved to be closer to my sister, he started taking care of her dog. And then the dog adopted him. Bobo gave my dad energy again and purpose to get up in the morning. There was socializing with other dogs which led to interactions with other people. Places to visit and friends to see…
Bobo kept my father alive in more ways than one can imagine. Both are missed.
