Journal of Sacred Work

Caregivers have superpowers! Radical Loving Care illuminates the divine truth that caregiving is not just a job. It is Sacred Work.

About

Ireland Mar 2011By the late John O' Donohue

“On this Easter, let us look again at the lives we have been so generously given and let us let fall away the useless baggage that we carry – old pains, old habits, old ways of seeing and feeling – and let us have the courage to begin again. Life is very short, and we are no sooner here than it is time to depart again, and we should use to the full the time that we still have.

We don’t realize all the good we can do. A kind, encouraging word or helping hand can bring many a person through dark valleys in their lives. We weren’t put here to make money or to acquire status or reputation. We were sent here to search for the light of Easter in our hearts, and when we find it we are meant to give it away generously. The dawn that is rising this Easter morning is a gift to our hearts and we are meant to celebrate it and to carry away from this holy, ancient place the gifts of healing and light and the courage of a new beginning.”

New beginnings are invaluable! Give away your old shirt; your old suit you never wear and all those outrageous ties that you were so proud of when you went to work in the city.
Break out of any old routine that you do without thinking! Do you have to drive the same way to the post office every time? Take a different road; walk a new pathway; telephone a new friend but do not text or email them.
Try a new activity or hobby; if you normally read fiction; try a non-fiction book–anything to move you out of your comfort zone and into a greater reality: this planet we inhabit for a while, has unlimited possibilities, even for you, though many go unnoticed by you every single day.
Step to your window; take a deep cleansing breath; see the sunshine diverted through the trees. Now, go forward as a brand new person; it’s you but the new refreshed version, hah!

First and foremost, THIS IS A STUNNING PHOTOGRAPH, Liz.
As O’Donohue wrote, “We don’t realize all the good we can do.” You instantly did so much good by posting this commentary on Easter weekend along with your warm, comfortable image from six years ago in Ireland.
Six years or, perhaps, the moment of eternity.
If O’Donohue were still with us he would join me in a round of applause for you and your work. (and thank you, cousin Terry, for your beautiful comments as well.)

Dawn is a beginning, a daily rebirth. Yesterday has been cleansed away and is now a FedEx package being sent to storage. Smile at the morning bluejay. Thank Larry the lizard for keeping the spiders at bay. You may not have made this sunrise, but with mindfulness you can experience a renewal in each deep breath you take.
    Happy Easter everyone.
Thank you Liz for sharing your lovely picture from Ireland.
    Namaste

May Easter Peace surround you and those suffering as we endeavour to be a spark of Hope in our troubled world. Thanks Liz for the encouraging words from our good friend, John, and the reminder that it’s in the little things that we can live the Resurrection. May be be the presence of comfort to one and all.

Liz: Thank you LIZ for this beautiful picture of Corcomroe Abbey. This reminds me of days passed when I visited Ireland. There were the lush green fields and the Botanical garden with the display of beautiful flowers. Easter brings us freshness and the newness of Life which is given to us by our living and Loving Lord that we may walk with Him in newness of life.

Hi Terry, thanks for your encouragement! Great suggestions for shifting out of our comfort zone. I especially like giving away things that we no longer make use of but somehow hold on to…for security? I am working on this. It can be a freeing experience, making room for a new way of living.
I appreciate your recommendation to pick up the phone rather than send an e-mail. I have 2 people in my life; my brother and a long time friend who decline to communicate by e-mail and one even by phone. I correspond by letter and the act of sitting down to write is a much more reflective and sacred experience.

Thank you for your Easter blessings, Maureen..and yes it is in the little things and in the moment that we can live out expressions of love through an accepting presence of the full spectrum, the light and shadow that is a part of the whole of our experience.
