About

The Soul of A Mountain

Note: Excerpt from the writing of David Whyte " The World Also Has a Soul."

"The first step to preserving the soul in our individual lives is to admit that the world has a soul also, and is somehow participating with us in our work and destiny.

That there is a sacred otherness to the world which is breathtakingly helpful simply because it is not us; it is not defined by our human worries and preoccupations, and it never will be.

I should be content
to look at a mountain
for what it is
and not as a comment of my life’

by- David Ignatow

Taking the first vulnerable steps into our own experience, no matter how small or hidden at the beginning, opens us to a more generous life, where what we have to give figures as largely as what we receive.

We stop trying to draw infinitely from a finite world and begin to learn how little is necessary to live a life that honors the soul of the world."

I imagine that a mountain or a trout stream, indeed, has a soul, if by this, we mean, an essence not fully comprehendible, a drawing power, quite magnetically mystical, and yet oh, so very familiar to us all!
Our collective challenge, as fellow citizens of planet Earth, is to become more aware; more grateful; and more respectful of all that God, through Earth, gives us: our being; our sustenance; our daily round; each other; and lastly: beauty beyond our comprehension!

To sit and wonder as we contemplate the ‘Other’ in whatever appears is a gift. Thank you Liz and David.

Did your mother hold your hand? Give you a hug? Listen to your ups and downs? Give you advice? Sing you a song? Read you a story? A mothers souls is full of love.
Mother Nature. Mother Earth. We were birthed unto your world. You birthed our mothers and gave them knowledge and a soul that hugs with love. Your soul touched theirs and theirs touched ours. We must respect your unconditional Love.
Thank you for your reflection today, Liz. Thank you for your watercolor. And to each, may you decide if it is sunrise or sunset or…

Apparently the comment I posted previously didn’t come up. Your watercolor is magnificent! Light/soul pouring right through the mountain and spilling below.
Ignatow’s comment is so true that it almost embarrasses. So many of us think that so much of the world is a comment on us and this, of course, blocks us from appreciating the thing or being for its own beauty and elegance. Thank you, Liz.

Thank you for your reflection, Jolyon, it is lovely accompaniment and perhaps this is both a sunrise and sunset. The promise of a new dawn after every night…

I agree about Ignatow’s comment, Erie but it serves to heighten my awareness and appreciation of Beauty. Thank you for all that you see in this watercolor; the light/soul of this mountain spilling forth.
