Journal of Sacred Work

Caregivers have superpowers! Radical Loving Care illuminates the divine truth that caregiving is not just a job. It is Sacred Work.

About

To understand Christmas is to come face to face with the incarnation. The very notion that God imbued creation with divinity makes everything we see sacred. Every step we take a pilgrimage to the divine.

Excerpt from the Poem, "Annunciation" by Denise Levertov

Arrived on solemn grandeur of great wings,
the angelic ambassador, standing or hovering,
 whom she acknowledges, a guest.

But we are told of meek obedience. No one mentions

  courage.

       The engendering Spirit
did not enter her without consent.

         God waited.

 Compassion and intelligence
 fused in her, indivisible.

Called to a destiny more momentous
than any in all of Time,
she did not quail,

  only asked

a simple, ‘How can this be?’
and gravely, courteously,
took to heart the angel’s reply,
the astounding ministry she was offered:

to bear in her womb
Infinite weight and lightness; to carry
in hidden, finite inwardness,

nine months of Eternity; to contain
in slender vase of being,
the sum of power–
in narrow flesh,
the sum of light.

                     Then bring to birth,
push out into air, a Man-child
needing, like any other,
milk and love–

but who was God.

What wonder captivates us at this time. May we be open to the spark of the Divine not only in our encounters and coming together at Christmastime but every moment that beckons us, calls us to delve deeper into the Wonder of all Mystery.

“Every step we take a pilgrimage to the divine”. This thought is captivating and challenging at the same time!
Do we not take many thoughtless steps each day without pausing to give gratitude to God and to those around us who brighten our lives? Shouldn’t every day be devoted, at least in part, to helping those also on their way to the divine?
Maybe the “divine” is actually comprised of little bits of each day compacted into an eternity of love, caring, and gratefulness.

Yes, perhaps every time we are fully present and open to the moment without judgement (ah, that is the challenging part) I think this is when we experience the divine. Mystics say the portal to this way of living is through contemplative prayer.Rather than petitioning God, we listen and experience communion. The more we cultivate our relationship in this way the more it is how we meet every moment. Hopefully, more willing to open to the person as they are and experience as it is with gratitude and acceptance.
Thank you for your thought provoking response Terry and for journeying here with us. Merry Christmas and abundant gratitude for you!

You combined another of your fine works of art with fine lines from Denise Levertov including to bring us beauty at this most beautiful time of year – our Jesus who:
    “needing, like any other,
    milk and love–
    but who was God.”
