Journal of Sacred Work

Caregivers have superpowers! Radical Loving Care illuminates the divine truth that caregiving is not just a job. It is Sacred Work.

About

Lion King The finest twenty minutes on Television occurs each year's end when "CBS Sunday Morning" honors the famous among us who have left us.

2024 was Quincy Jones' last year on this orb. If you remember his genius, including his production of "We Are the World,"* it was because you were among the millions joining hands and voices for a few moments of unity in 1985.

James Earl Jones acting lit up the screen (e.g. Field of Dreams.) His stirring bass announced CNN and voiced a powerful cartoon caregiver, Mufasa and Mufasa's ghost in the Lion King. Now a "ghost" himself, he can still comfort us.

As I write this news comes of the passing of the peanut farmer who became President. Jimmy Carter was a loving soul whose leadership won him a Nobel Peace Prize and, post Presidency, brought us Habitat for Humanity.

Missing from the list, of course, are a million humble caregivers worldwide who passed away. They spent their careers easing our pain, delivering our babies, bringing us curing medications and healing us with their presence as co-workers.

If one of them is someone you knew, please reference them in a comment, below (your email will NOT appear.) That will honor their name to hundreds who read this column each week and help us remember all who spent their careers dedicated to meeting need with love.

Today, I honor the late Dr. Bob Hardin, M.D., a magnificent human being who. served many years on the staff of Baptist Hospital, was Chief Medical Officer, and a consistently kind-hearted soul. All who knew him were blessed.

Today I honor Marian Hamm who was the Senior VP and CNO at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus and previously the CNO in Riverside Toledo. Marian was loved by all her colleagues and of course her family. Marian had high expectations but was always fair. She helped people like me who were not direct caregivers learn how to contribute in the overall mission. She was always humble and caring and had a big heart.

Two women that have passed that were wonderful caregivers and mentors to me as a new grad, were Jane Newman and Linda Hall. We had a great run on the rehab and subacute units ” across the street”. These two ladies will always have a special place in my heart!

I would like to honor June van den Noort RN a dear friend for over 40 years who dedicated her energies to the healing profession of hospice care. June was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and nurse who was always there to lend a helping hand and give support in times of vulnerability, grief and hardship and in times of joy, celebration and thanksgiving.

I would love to honor the wonderful medical staff of the are in the 1960’s. I was hired in 1963 and transferred to the ER in 1967. Our physiciian at that time was the first ER physician. Dr. Yu. Later, Riverside hired Dr. William Hall and his group of physicians- Drs. George Millay. Dr. Evans, Dr. Clarence Carpenter, Dr. George Millay, and Dr. Jules Tesi. They were so supportive. They worked with a young staff with very little experience in ER nursing. We owe them so much!! We all became better nurses and better human beings due to to them. I will never forget them

Today I honor Alphonso (Al) Bean. My RN preceptor, mentor and friend. She was a wonderful nurse and taught me so much. We both loved oncology and when she passed from cancer she asked if I would speak about nursing at her funeral. What an honor. I still miss her all these years later.
