Caregivers have superpowers! Radical Loving Care illuminates the divine truth that caregiving is not just a job. It is Sacred Work.

About

Fr Greg Boyle As I reflect on the life work of Father Greg Boyle, it is clear to see that he is a saintly man. This week I had an opportunity to listen as Fr Boyle speak.  Father Boyle, is a Jesuit priest, who has dedicated his life to transforming the lives of those often left behind by society. When he witnessed the escalation of gang violence in his community, he responded to the needs with a small outreach program that led to the founding of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, which has grown to be the largest gang-intervention, and rehabilitation program worldwide.  Father Boyle has shown us that love, compassion, and a sense of belonging can heal even the deepest wounds.

Fr Boyle believes that we need less tribes and more villages in this world. At Homeboys when a gang member walks through the door they are warmly welcomed with compassion, unconditional regard and without judgment. This is a place where wounded souls can begin to see "the truth of who they really are, beloved."  Fr Boyle’s philosophy centers around the idea of relationship, community and the profound connection that unites us all as members of one human family.

In his book, "Tattoos On The Heart" Father Boyle shares a story about a young man named Miguel who grew up in a neighborhood where violence and poverty were the norms. In his early teens he joined a gang, seeking the protection and camaraderie he couldn't find at home. For years, Miguel was trapped in a cycle of violence and incarceration, believing that his life had no other path.

When Miguel first walked through the doors of Homeboy Industries, he was met with open arms. Father Boyle and his team offered him a job, educational opportunities, and, most importantly, a supportive community. Initially skeptical, Miguel gradually began to soften and open up. He attended therapy sessions, participated in job training, and was mentored by people who genuinely cared about his well-being.

One day, Miguel shared his story with Father Boyle. He spoke of the pain of losing friends to gang violence, the shame of disappointing his family, and the hopelessness that once consumed him. Father Boyle listened intently, offering words of encouragement and reminding Miguel that he was not defined by his past. "You are a son of God," Father Boyle said, "and your worth is beyond measure."

Over time, Miguel began to see that he did not have to be a victim of his life circumstances but rather as a person who could change his life with the support of Homeboy Industries, Miguel earned his GED, attended college and secured a stable job. He also mentored others who faced similar challenges and by sharing his story and encouragement, opened a window for others to seeto new possibilities.

Father Boyle often speaks of the idea that "no one stands outside the circle of compassion." Through his ministry, he has created a space where individuals like Miguel can heal, grow, and find their place in the world.” Countless people’s lives have been transformed through this incredible program that addresses the underlying social issues rooted in exclusion and marginalization.

Father Boyle also shared the understanding, that not only the individuals who come to homeboys are transformed but also those who offer support.  For when one opens their heart "to receive the tender glance of God” and reflects that tender glance to others, both experience the tranforming power of Love.

In reflecting on Father Greg Boyle's honest and couragious work, it is clear that the most profound change occurs not through punishment or rejection, but through love and acceptance. By recognizing the inherent worth of every individual and cultivating an authentic community built on empathy, love and kindness, Father Boyle has shown us that we can create a world where no one is left behind, and where everyone has the opportunity to flourish.

Powerful and profound, Liz. Thank you. In this weekend when there is change in President may the good done by millions of unsung heroes like Fr Greg, drown out the voices of fear and rejection. May the glance of God draw us into a compassionate embrace – one that in turn reaches out to others.
