In 1975 John Pugh was a finance director at Owens Illinois in Toledo. One day, I asked his 5-year-old son, Pat, "What is your dad's job?"
"He works with money!" Pat announced.
"But, what is his job with money?" I persisted.
He glanced down at the sidewalk in thought, then said, "You know those guys that take your money on the turnpike and give you a ticket?"
"Yes."
"That. He does that."
His dad laughed his head off when I reported back. Once again, parents are out of touch with how their small children think.
I am one of the few dads that thinks it matters for our kids to be in touch with their parents work.
What if the parents are professional caregivers?
Once again, I revisited the gold mine of my 2001 interview at Baptist Hospital Day Care Center.
