Journal of Sacred Work

Caregivers have superpowers! Radical Loving Care illuminates the divine truth that caregiving is not just a job. It is Sacred Work.

About

[This meditation is an expression of thanksgiving begun by Cathy Self, Senior Vice President for the Baptist Healing Trust.]

Norman Rockwell gave voice to four freedoms through his painting. One (see below) is titled "Freedom from Fear"and seems an appropriate beginning to a remembering of that for which we may feel thankful. All who visit these pages are invited to continue with your own expressions of thanksgiving.

Rockwell_fear For freedom from fear,

The wind’s gentle embrace,

Rough edges of a broken shell;

The love-light in my grandson’s eyes, and

the dimple that signals outright joy in my granddaughter’s face,

A warm and welcoming home,

Sky-filled hues of scarlet, crimson, amethyst, and deepest blue,

Refuge and safety in my husband’s arms;

Heartbeat of the sea as it breaks on shore,

Hearing God walk near in the rustling grass,

Knowing with certainty the sweet aroma of mercy, grace, and Love;

Tired feet,

Busy calendars,

Cookie crumbs on my kitchen floor,

Refrains of “Amazing Grace” sung with aging voice,

Laughter carried in the air,

A fire in the fireplace and a worn, cozy comforter;

Sacred ground found in all places,

Cacophony of rain drops on my roof,

Crunchy leaves on the ground,

Snow white blossoms on a fence row,

Friendship that transcends differences,

Joy in a shared journey….

Quiet mornings; solitary voice of a songbird
My dog greeting me exuberantly, every time
    A hot cup of coffee
Holiday pajama days watching old black and white movies
    Jimmy Stewart in “Harvey”
How my friend held my face and said, “Please don’t go”
Entering another world within a book
What meditation and prayer awakens in me
Watching “Young Frankenstein” and laughing when I’m sad
A kind gesture between strangers, becoming instant friends
Love’s intimacies, spontaneous joy, expressing, sharing, Being Love, unending
    Wessel family gatherings, making horseradish
Sweetness of an apology when my son has been grumpy
Lee and his family coming home for Christmas
That I was born into the Sorensen family
Family vacations in New Hampshire and by the ocean
Growing up in a neighborhood as one of the “Sorensen kids”
    Every moment shared with Johnny
Of willingness to receive Love and accept forgiveness
    Knowing you
How time suspended yesterday, opening a portal into a long conversation with my brother Tommy
    Your beautiful heart
That Love is the answer to every question

The joys of times gone by and all those who no longer grace the table but left such lasting impressions and love.
Pink apple pies (because my dad used cinnamon candies and so do I!)
All the struggles that make the joys of this time so sweet.
Hymns that taught me so much about God and my journey home.
A special bouquet of fresh flowers ‘just because’ from my husband of 49+ years.
Good reports after a scary year of recurrent cancer, chemotherapy and surgery.
Listening to the rain fall and the birds sing.
Each morning when I awake and say “Thank you!”

    Day 333:
    Around Us by ~Marvin Bell
We need some pines to assuage the darkness
    when it blankets the mind,
we need a silvery stream that banks as smoothly
as a plane’s wing, and a worn bed of
needles to pad the rumble that fills the mind,
and a blur or two of a wild thing
that sees and is not seen. We need these things
    between appointments, after work,
and, if we keep them, then someone someday,
    lying down after a walk
and supper, with the fire hole wet down,
the whole night sky set at a particular
time, without numbers or hours, will cause
a little sound of thanks–a zipper or a snap–
to close round the moment and the thought
    of whatever good we did.

    Day 334:
Thanksgiving Reflections by St. Thérèse Couderc – 1865
I had a few days ago, an insight which consoled me very much.
It was during my thanksgiving, when I make a few reflections upon the goodness of God, and how should one not think of this at such a time, of that infinite goodness, uncreated goodness, the source of all goodness. …
I saw written as in letters of gold this word “Goodness”
which I repeated for a long time with indescribable sweetness.
I beheld it, I say, written upon all creatures, animate and inanimate, rational or not, all bore this name goodness. …
I understood then that all these creatures have of goodness and all the services and assistance that we receive from each of them is a benefit, which we owe to the goodness of God who has communicated to them something of his infinite goodness so that we may meet it in everything and everywhere.

I received this little message tucked into a Thanksgiving card this year and I thought I would share the message with you.
    Thankfulness
“Let us rise up and be thankful, for even if we didn’t learn a lot today, a least we learned a little, and if we didn’t learn a little, at least we didn’t get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn’t die; so, let us all be thankful.” ~Buddha
“I will start and end today thinking about how fortunate I am, right here, right now.”

Thanksgiving for memory – what a treasure we store within ourselves, memory of people who have touched our lives, seeing their faces stirs joy within. Memory brings so much to life – especially beauty – oh what is stored there. So often I can visit my treasures of memory and a wonderful world opens for me – the memory not only revives but enables me to rejoice once again in the graced experience with which I have been gifted. I am especially grateful for this amazing technolgy that enables me to connect with so many people in different parts of the world.
