Journal of Sacred Work

Caregivers have superpowers! Radical Loving Care illuminates the divine truth that caregiving is not just a job. It is Sacred Work.

About

Child laughing  A child laughs. Everyone feels better. But, can laughter actually help cure illness? Some doctors think so.

Carole Williams had nothing to laugh about on the morning she awoke with no feeling in her feet. She & her husband Stu went to the doctor.

After examination the physician's face bore that grim expression no patient wants to see. “You have Guillain-Barré Syndrome,” he told Carole.

Was that one of your childhood nightmares: To be completely paralyzed, unable to speak, drowning in your own body?

That is the future Carole’s physician described. “The numbness in your toes will rise up your legs. In a few days you will be paralyzed from the waist down. Next your upper body will numb. Then, you will be unable to move except, perhaps, to blink.”

Carole's next year was agonizing until one afternoon a therapist appeared, He offered brief freedom.

“We are going to place a device in your throat," the therapist said. As you exhale, you can say one sentence. Let me know when you are ready by blinking your eyes.”

She blinked. The device was inserted.

Her husband waited expectantly. Which of the thousands of wishes his wife had bottled up would pour forth?

Carole exhaled her sentence. It sounded to Stu like, “Gedamihrablegeeblaurhbla.”

“Are you trying to say you love me?” Stu asked.

   Carole blinked no.

“Are you trying to say you love our kids? Again, Carole blinked a no.

“Let’s try again,” the therapist offered.

This time, Carole sputtered three words, “Get my hairdresser!

When patients are bedridden small things become big. Great caregivers understand.

But soon after this incident Carole's body pivoted towards health (Subsequently, she experienced a ninety-nine percent recovery.) Did laughter help tip the scales?

Carole and Stu tell & retell this story. Each time, they roar with their audience about that magic moment when laughter illuminated their darkest hours.

This is such a great story, Erie and a beautiful reminder of how laughter helps to shift energy. In the poignancy of that moment, the absurdity and struggle, a chord of connection is struck! Wow! I am so happy Carole is doing so well and that she can look back at that time and laugh with Stu. You captured the scene so well, I found myself laughing too.
I love the exuberant joy in the face of your grandson; how abundant in blessings!

Erie, This does my heart so much good and reminds me that laughter brings freedom and lifts us above our circumstances. It lightens our cares so that our souls feel like a balloon that has just been released. So many times when things have looked bleak, some small thing has brought a smile, a chuckle, or a deep-down belly laugh to my heart. Today was one of those days…on top of caregiver burnout, the back door knob fell off in my hand and I couldn’t get out, then my spare garage door opener had a dead battery, and when I could finally get out of the house and open the garage door, a giant lizard ran up my jeans until I ran screaming down the sidewalk. I looked up and my mom was looking out the window and laughing so hard there were tears in her eyes. And then I laughed too… God bless you Erie! You and the lizards certainly brighten my day!

I read this Sunday night and have thought about it several times – laughing each time. I agree with Liz, this really is a story about connection. And a reminder that all will be well (as I understand it from Julian of Norwich).

As the mother of two young boys, I know the power their laughter has on me. It helped us get through the recent passing of my grandmother who kept us laughing into her final days. When I think of the times she would stick out her tongue to the boys and make them giggle, I am reminded of her greatness and how she kept laughter alive for us, even in her final days. Thank you for this great reminder.

Great story, Cheri. I am so honored to be ranked with “the lizards” as beings that brightened your day. What a lovely thing to see your mom chuckling down – from above…

Thank you, LIz. You have described it well by writing “how laughter helps to shift energy.” That is it! Negative energy or dark energy or simply other energy changes the moment a laugh dawns.

Thank you Erie on the subject of “laughter”. I am convinced that with the therapist’s work and encouragement it did a world of good for the patient-her first word she uttered was for “a hairdresser”. She wants to look nice again. Her dignity was restored and she continued to heal. This reminds me of Stephen Hawkins the scientist and physicist who in spite of his ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) beats all odds – he got married, had children and continued with his career in science research. “Laugh and the world laughs with us.”
